Steps to take to turn a hobby into making money

Find out if others are successful

A great place to start is to see if others are successful making money with your hobby. To find out, you can type in your hobby on YouTube, Google, Amazon, or Etsy for starters. This is a good place to see how and where people are making money.

Find out how you want to make money

Some people enjoy being in front of a camera on YouTube or being behind a computer on a blog. Others enjoy using their hands often and creating and selling items. You can even create a course or digital book that teaches others how to get better at your hobby.

Create a schedule and be consistent

One of the best ways to ensure you make money from your hobby is by giving it attention. To maximize your chance of success, create a schedule for the month and goals you want to complete by the end of each month.

Tips to help you get started

Turn your hobby into a blog

Instead of using your hobby to create items to sell online, you can teach others how to excel with your on a blog. On your blog, you can share tutorials, projects, how-to-guides, and get really creative. Blogs make money with affiliate marketing (people buying through your affiliate links), ad revenue, sponsored partnerships, and items/services you sell. If you’re new to blogging, I recommend the course Launch Your Blog Biz, which teaches you a step-by-step process to making your first $1,000/month blogging.

Turn your hobby into a YouTube channel

Similar to starting a blog, you can start a YouTube channel teaching others how to do your hobby. For example, if you’re great at drawing, knitting, or graphic design, you can teach others how to get started and how to create projects. One of my favorite resources for YouTube is YouTube Secrets: The Ultimate Guide To Growing Your Following And Making Money As A Video Influencer. This book teaches you the essential ingredients for a successful YouTube channel, new strategies for getting new subscribers and views, and ten ways to make money on YouTube.

Turn your hobby into a service

Most hobbies can turn into a service naturally. For example, if you enjoy photography, you can advertise your skills for weddings or graduations. If you enjoy baking, you can learn how to make and sell dog treats at farmers markets or on Etsy. Etsy is an amazing place for people with all kinds of hobbies. Whatever your hobby is, you can most likely sell it on Etsy.

Turn your hobby into a course

Your hobby can be turned into a course or digital book that people buy. For example, there are courses that teach people how to create and sell digital printables on Etsy. What was once a hobby for a Seattle native turned into a course she now sells teaching others how to make digital printables online. If you need help figuring out how to create a course or digital book, check out Six Figure Blogger. Six Figure Blogger teaches you a step-by-step method to make money selling a course or digital book.

Hobbies you can start today

Baking

Did you know you can make $1,000+ a month part-time working at home with a dog treat business? You can even make $5,000-$8,000 from your home kitchen if you do it full-time. You can get your kids involved, work from home, create your own schedule, and make treats for dogs. I don’t think it gets better than that.

I know you have a ton of questions about this and want to learn more before signing up for a course. That’s why Kristin offers a completely free workshop to answer all of your questions. Get her free workshop here and see if this side hustle is for you.

Start a blog

I started this blog in college and graduated my senior year earning $80,000 a year. Now, I work from home, spend time with my family and dogs, and I get to take my family on nice trips and donate to my favorite charities.

Blogging isn’t easy and takes a lot of hard work. If you feel that you can help people with a blog and inspire others to live better lives, a blog is a great way to do that. I make money with ad revenue, affiliate marketing, sponsored posts, and selling my own digital products.

Are you not sure where to start on creating a profitable blog? I recommend checking out this course roadmap to figure out where you should get started first!

Create & sell printables on Etsy

Do you enjoy graphic design and creating things? Julie from the blog Millennial Boss is killin’ it in the side hustle world by selling Etsy printables.

This side hustle is almost entirely passive, meaning you do the work in one sitting, and then get paid for it for months and years to come. With just a few hours of work, Julie’s made over $5,000 selling printables on Etsy.

Julie recently created Etsy Printables where she shows you exactly how to make money selling Etsy Printables. I’ve gone through it myself and plan on adding this as a side hustle myself because it’s one of the easiest ways to make passive income.

Are you wondering how to get started selling Etsy printables? This free guide here has a secret list of best-selling products by month and how to capitalize on seasonal trends to make sales. It’s a free download and SO good!

Surveys

I genuinely enjoy surveys because I love sharing my opinion on things. I’ve always been into taking quizzes and surveys, so naturally, I love this method of making some extra cash.

Here are a few of my favorite surveys:
