There are tons of side hustles out there – from babysitting, walking dogs, or working as a virtual assistant.

Many of us never even think about using our hobbies as a way to make money, but it’s a great way to earn cash! You can turn your passion into a part-time or full-time career. Pretty amazing and a ton of people are doing it.

Here are 20 of the best hobbies that can also make you money!

Before we get started, make sure to sign up for my free resource library and get access to exclusive printables all about saving money and building wealth, meal planning, and more.

1. Writing

Do you enjoy writing? If so, you can turn your passion into a career.

I had no idea what freelance writing was (or that you could make money from it) until I met my friend Holly. I was even more shocked to see how much she makes as a freelance writer.

Holly makes six-figures with her freelance writing career; $225,000 a year to be exact.

There are hundreds of freelance writing jobs out there, but getting those freelance jobs isn’t easy, which is why Holly created Earn More Writing.

I took Earn More Writing to help me get started in the freelance writer field, which helped me land on sites like GoBankingRates and many others. I went from charging $50 to $250 per article and now, I know I can charge much more than that with my writing experience.

This work from home opportunity is legit, lucrative, and lets you work anywhere in the world. Holly travels (a ton!) and works all around the world.

In her free workshop, she shares her techniques she’s used to make six-figures freelance writing.

You can check out her course and free workshop here.

2. Start a blog

Do you enjoy helping others? Do you want to start your own small business?

I started this blog in college and graduated my senior year making $80,000 a year. Now, I work from home, spend time with my family and dogs, and I get to take my family on nice trips and donate to my favorite charities.

Blogging isn’t easy and takes a lot of hard work. It’s not for everyone. I had to work for free for a long time to build this business from the ground up. If you feel that you can help people with a blog and inspire others to live better lives, a blog is a great way to do that. I make money with ad revenue, affiliate marketing, sponsored posts, and selling my own digital products.

If your dream is to become a full-time blogger and start a blog, I recommend starting a blog with Bluehost. Bluehost has 24/7 support, a money-back guarantee, and makes it as easy as possible to start a blog.

Start a blog today for just $2.95/month with my step-by-step tutorial here. It’s easy, painless, and takes less than 20 minutes to start a blog of your own. With my link, you get a discount from $7.99/month to $2.95/month.

Are you not sure where to start on creating a profitable blog? I recommend checking out this course roadmap to figure out where you should get started first!

Julie from the blog Millennial Boss is killin’ it in the side hustle world by selling Etsy printables.

This side hustle is almost entirely passive, meaning you do the work in one sitting, and then get paid for it for months and years to come. With just a few hours of work, Julie’s made over $5,000 selling printables on Etsy.

Julie recently created Etsy Printables where she shows you exactly how to make money selling Etsy Printables. I’ve gone through it myself and plan on adding this as a side hustle myself because it’s one of the easiest ways to make passive income.

8. Walk dogs

Do you enjoy walking and playing with dogs? Who doesn’t?!

Before I was a full-time blogger, I was a dog walker for Rover. The job was amazing.

The dogs were so much fun to hangout with and the pet parents were always so kind and thankful. I miss working for Rover so much!

You can earn up to $1,000 a month from playing with dogs. Seriously, that’s amazing.

Rover is one of my favorite side hustles because you get paid to take care of dogs or cats. I got paid well, had great customer support, and loved my clients.

Sign up to become a Rover sitter or walker here.

9. Surveys

Do you enjoy filling out quizzes, polls, and surveys? This is one of my favorite things to do (I’m not even sure why) but it’s always so satisfying to complete a survey or poll.

Filling out surveys to make money is an easy way to make money by simply providing your opinion to questions.

I genuinely enjoy surveys because I love sharing my opinion on things. I’ve always been into taking quizzes and surveys, so naturally, I love this method of making some extra cash.

Here are a few of my favorite surveys:

10. Proofreading

Transform your passion for words and reading by becoming a professional proofreader, and help people like me who are terrible at proofreading.

I hire a proofreader for special projects which has been a must in my business. Proofreaders are a must for books, magazines, websites, and tons of other projects, so they’re always in demand.

Proofreaders can earn between $17-$30 per hour and offers competitive pay and flexible hours while working from home.

Here is a free workshop that will show you if proofreading is right for you.

11. DIY

Have you ever thought about DIYing a project and selling it?

There are hundreds of things you can make and sell online, you just have to be a little creative.

For example, I have a friend that creates stickers and sells them on Etsy.

I have another friend who created a budget sheet and sells it on Etsy.

I love supporting small businesses and buying on Etsy lets me do that.

Explore Etsy and see what other people are DIYing and creating. Can you create something and sell it on Etsy?

12. Photography

Do you enjoy photography and shooting photos? If so, you can turn that into a career.

My friend Kayla Butler from Ivory Mix created a successful blog + membership website. She sells her photos in a membership style site and it’s amazing. I’ve been a member for years now. It’s totally worth it if you’re a small business owner or blogger.

I recently interviewed Kayla and she shared her best business tips here.

You could also sell your photos to Unsplash, which is a stock photography website.

13. Grocery shopping

Do you enjoy grocery shopping? I love grocery shopping and picking out food for myself, and I’d almost call it a hobby. I love searching for the freshest fruits and vegetables and playing around with fun recipes and new food.

But this hobby of mine can get expensive, which is why I do everything I can to save money. One of the things that helps the most is ibotta. Ibotta is a free app that gives you cash back for making purchases on things like groceries, clothes, toiletries, and much more.

If you’re downloading Ibotta on your phone, the app will ask if you have a referral code. Use my referral code: lwyxxrb and you’ll get $10 for signing up.

Ibotta even has a welcome bonus of up to $20 for new users! It’s super easy to redeem your welcome bonus.

How to redeem your $20 welcome bonus:

  1. Click this $20 welcome bonus link here. Bonus will automatically apply, no code needed. Enter your email address.
  2. Download the Ibotta app on your phone and complete registration.
  3. Redeem 10 offers within 2 weeks of signing up. Any Brand and Any Item offers are excluded from the Welcome Bonus. You’ll know if an item is under Any Brand or Any Item because underneath the photo of the item, it’ll say Any Brand or Any Item. This step gives you $10.
  4. Redeem a mobile shopping offer and get $5.
  5. Redeem a secondary welcome bonus and get $5.

14. Learn how to code

Do you enjoy coding? I have a few friends that are full-time web developers and love to code, which is why I need to mention this here.

If you enjoy playing around with code, you can sell your themes on Creative Market like my friend Tiffany from Beautiful Dawn Designs. She creates stunning themes that new bloggers use on their websites.

Not only that, you can apply to hundreds of online jobs at FlexJobs.com. FlexJobs is similar to JobIndeed with one BIG difference. FlexJobs goes through every single job and makes sure they’re safe, not a scam, and a legit online job. FlexJobs charges a small fee to apply to the online jobs, but you can scan through jobs for free. I signed up for fun (to make sure it’s something I can recommend) and it’s amazing! You can check out jobs on FlexJobs here.

15. Cleaning up the environment

Did you know you can make money by cleaning up the environment?

Brian from CleanLots created a six-figure business from a field that needs a ton of help – cleaning parking lots and other areas.

I volunteer in a local clean-up crew (so I guess you could call this a hobby of mine) and it’s a seriously underrated field. Plus, you’re really helping the animals as they usually get the worst of the litter.

You can learn more about Brian and CleanLots here.

16. Meal planning

A family can easily spend hundreds (even $1000) on groceries per month. I used to spend $500 per month on food and restaurant outings. It got really crazy!

When I started budgeting, I realized how much money I was spending on groceries and cut that spendy habit immediately.

If you need help with meal planning and grocery shopping, I recommend $5 Meal Plan

$5 Meal Plan is a meal planning service that sends you a delicious meal plan and shopping list every single week for just $5 a month. It saves you so much time and money. The service is so worth it and it only costs $5!

You can get a free 14 day trial of $5 Meal Plan here.

17. Knit or crochet

I’ve recently become absolutely obsessed with knitting and crocheting and never had any idea how many people are full-time small business owners with their knit/crochet business.

If you enjoy knitting or crocheting, you can sell your projects on Etsy, sell patterns you’ve created, start a YouTube channel teaching others how to knit or crochet, and so much more.

18. Baking

Do you have a passion for baking? You could sell your baked goods locally.

I have a friend who sells dog treats in my small Colorado town. Given, these are for dogs, but you can also do the same for people.

You can learn more about baking and making money from it here.

19. Trading stocks

I only just started trading stocks this year but it’s already been such an experience already. I’d even say it’s turned into a fun hobby of mine! I use the Robinhood app. The app is user-friendly and great for a beginner like me.

Sign up at Robinhood now to find out what free stock you’ll get. It could be a stock like Apple, Ford, or Sprint.

20. Recycling

Did you know you can make money by recycling?

In recent years it’s become a fun hobby of mine to find new ways to recycle and be more eco-friendly. I was surprised to hear about recycling as a side hustle!

You can sell your old Amazon boxes for cash, sell your old car battery to Advance Auto Parts, or sell scrap metal.

Don’t forget to sign up for the free resource library and get exclusive access to free printables & planners related to saving and making money, meal planning, and more!

Alexis, I know this is a blog for women but as a man, I have enjoyed a lot of your post. This one is great.

I started writing as a side hustle a couple of months ago. I am starting to see some results and am getting better at it as well. But I do think this is one side hustle that is quicker than most at payback.

All the recommendations you have are great but like most money-making opportunities there is competition so working hard goes hand in hand with periods of low income until you get established.

These are not easy money get rich quick type opportunities which I believe is what makes it such a great list.

I look forward to more of your post,

    1. Alexis

Thank you so much! This blog is for everyone, I just direct my attention to women. 🙂 I’m glad you enjoyed the post!

  2. Natasha Evans

Great information. I would love to freelance write. I do not know where to start. I sing and complete survey’s for cash. I am a full time mother looking for more work from home jobs. Can you suggest how to start freelance writing? Thanks so much. Looking for work with no investment financially like Surveytaker jobs as well.

    1. Alexis

I recommend reading #1 on this list and checking out Holly’s course. She’s a full-time freelance writer.
