Update 2023: After a few months with Mint Mobile, we still love it! It’s well worth the price we are paying (I pay $15/month).
Mint Mobile is a relatively new mobile company that is quite enticing.
People are switching from carriers like T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon and going over to Mint Mobile to save hundreds of dollars per year. My family switched to Mint Mobile and we are saving $960 a year just from this carrier switch.
Mint Mobile uses the same towers as T-Mobile, meaning you’re basically getting the same service as T-Mobile users but paying a fraction of the cost.
In today’s post I break down everything you need to know about Mint Mobile.
What is Mint Mobile?
Mint Mobile is a premium wireless company with plans starting as low as $15 a month.
You get to choose how much data you want which is not common with popular wireless carriers. This is where the savings really come in.
What carrier is behind Mint mobile?
Mint Mobile is on the T-Mobile network, the nations largest 5G network.
Can I keep my number if I switch to Mint Mobile?
Yes. There’s (what is supposed to be) a simple process to switch your number to Mint Mobile.
For me it wasn’t so simple so I recommend having the activation support specialists help you when you make the switch.
I also do NOT recommend the free trial because I believe that activated the new Mint Mobile phone number that we didn’t want.
Is Mint Mobile good for iPhone?
Yes, Mint Mobile works on iPhone’s. I recommend checking if your phone works with Mint Mobile by checking here.
How is Mint Mobile coverage?
Mint Mobile uses T-Mobile towers and since T-Mobile has the nations largest 5G network, coverage is great. You can even check how coverage is in your area by checking here.
What happens when you use all your Mint Mobile data?
If you’re like me and chose the lowest plan possible at $15 a month, that means you only get 4GB of data a month.
If you use all of your data, Mint Mobile doesn’t charge overages or cut you off.
Instead, all that will happen is data speed will slow. Mint Mobile sends you an email at the end of each month informing you of your current data usage.
How much data do you need?
You can actually find out how much data you need by seeing how much data you use with your current carrier.
You can ask your current carrier how much you use or you can find it in your dashboard.
To use less data, make sure to always be on wifi when you can and decease how often you’re using data when you’re out and about without data.
Can I change my plan?
If you find yourself burning through your data each month, you can upgrade your plan anytime. If you’re not using as much data, you can change to a smaller plan when it’s time to renew.
My personal experience switching to Mint Mobile
Mint Mobile was a little tricky for us to switch to and I believe it’s because we signed up for the free trial. If you can help it, I recommend against signing up for the free trial, and just starting on a paid plan.
Our phones switched to a Mint Mobile on a new phone number, despite us transferring our old number.
Both T-Mobile and Mint Mobile said the transfer was successful, yet when we went into our settings, we could see a new Mint Mobile phone number. The only thing that fixed it was removing the Mint Mobile cellular plan and adding it back on.
Another thing that happened was our voicemails completely shut off and we had to set up voicemails again, but never got any notification of having to do that.
So no one could leave us voicemails until we looked in the voicemail settings and figured out it was shut off.
However, we are saving $960/year switching to Mint Mobile so we were patient with the process and stuck with it.
Now we get great coverage and only pay for the data we need.
Benefits of Mint Mobile

How much can you save?
There’s even a fun quiz here that gives you an idea of how much you can save by switching to Mint Mobile.

How to get started
Choose one of Mint Mobile plans above. I chose the $15/month that you can see pictured below.
This plan gives me 4GB/month which is the lowest plan. $15 is the trial cost and goes up after the 3 months.
However, you can choose the 12 month plan and pay $15/month (but you have to pay the 12 months upfront to lock in the $15/cost). This ends up being $180 for 1 year.
Click “Buy Now” and then it takes you to the following page.
This is where you’ll check out. You can choose to get a regular SIM card (free 2-3 day shipping) or a free eSim via digital delivery.
Then you will check out and give your final details (name, address, etc.) $15/month does not include taxes.
I highly recommend calling a customer support specialist 800-683-7392 to make sure you’re doing everything correctly. They will tell you what to do step by step.
Final thoughts
Mint Mobile was tricky to switch to from T-Mobile because I had to do it myself. I wish I had switched with the help of an activation support specialist before even downloading the app.
This is what I recommend to you if you are thinking about switching to Mint Mobile so you don’t have to run through hurdles like I did.
Saving $960 a year by switching to Mint Mobile is so worth it.
