Less than a week ago, I took the plunge and decided to put a hole through my body for the 4th time. The 3 other times I got piercings (not including my ears), I decided to take them out all for a cleaner look.
For those of you that don’t know me in real life, I used to have my belly button pierced and my nose pierced (2 different times). I love the extra zing piercings add to the face, and the form of expression it can give off.

What made you want to get your septum pierced?
I actually did it on a whim. A week earlier I was browsing on Instagram at septum piercings and was becoming obsessed with the ‘clicker’ look. Anyway, my boyfriend told me he wanted to stop by at this shop where we live to look at some Halloween jewelry that came in. While we were there, I was looking around at all of the different jewelry and fell in love with the septum piercing clickers.
I wanted to get it done previously but thought I shouldn’t since my boyfriend has the same exact piercing. I mentioned that I really liked clickers and would be interested in getting it done, and he was totally on board, so I thought about it even further. (Keep in mind, this is all happening in the same day).
I told Aman, the guy that owns Apex in downtown Grand Junction, Colorado, that I was interested in getting my septum done but wanted to think about it for a bit. I ended up coming back an hour later and getting it done.
Did it hurt to pierce your septum?
Not NEARLY as bad as I thought it would hurt. The needle is pierced between the cartilage in the nose, also known as the “sweet spot”. On a 1-10 scale, the pain was a 5 and it only lasted a second. When he put the new jewelry in, it felt pretty uncomfortable but not nearly as bad as I thought it would. My boyfriend told me his experience was agonizing, but it was because he had really thick cartilage and Aman had to go pretty high up to get it pierced. The pain will vary depending on your pain tolerance, and what your nose is like. I’ve read from numerous online sites that septums are the least painful as long as they are done correctly (but like I said, can also vary on what your nose is like).
What was your experience like?
I was very fortunate to work with Aman as he is by far the most professional body modificator I’ve ever come across. He is one of the two APP (Association of Professional Piercers) in Colorado, which actually really surprised me. His studio is extremely clean, and he has tons of awesome jewelry constantly coming in. Aman also posts his new jewelry on the Facebook page below.
Also, I won’t lie and say I wasn’t freaking out beforehand. I don’t care how many tattoos and piercings I’ve gotten before, nothing prepared me for my septum piercing. I assumed it would be unbearable because of where the needle would go through, without knowing that it actually goes in between at the “sweet spot”.
Last minute thoughts
I do feel like I’ve been getting a lot of stares lately from older people, and probably all people in general. This piercing has really challenged myself not to care what other people think, and be happy and pleased with myself as long as I like what I look like.
I love the extra flare my septum ring adds to my face. It gives me an extra boost of confidence and also some badassery that I haven’t had before. I feel more courageous and brave and I even feel as though my workouts are a lot stronger as well.
If you want to get a piercing done, I believe the septum is the best choice because it can be easily hidden. I work at a high school and in the special needs classroom, so although my supervisor doesn’t care about my hiding it, I don’t want a kid yanking on it, obviously. Don’t let the thoughts of others keep you from doing what you want!
What I’ve learned from getting my septum pierced
- I’m learning not to care what people think of me – as much. I know I’ll always care a little bit.
- I’m not going to let other peoples’ thoughts refrain me from trying something out.
Below are a few pictures I’ve attached to show you my septum!
Do you have any piercings? Or do you prefer the ‘cleaner’ look on yourself?
