Today’s post is about getting ahead with your job. As you all know, I am currently working multiple jobs, and I want to be successful in all of them of course.
There are quite a few articles out there about the “secrets to success,” but most of the time, the secrets aren’t really all that great. Click here to find out how you can hone your leadership skills and get ahead in the workplace.

They’re just common sense. There are some other factors, though – factors that some authors just won’t write about because they don’t want to offend people.
I think you’re better readers than most, though, and I think you can handle the simple truths of work and life, so let’s talk about them.
You Must Display Intelligence
This one is one of the most obvious for sure. If you know what you’re talking about at work, you have a much better chance at getting a promotion than if you had no idea.
But, this point isn’t just about your intelligence, it’s also about your ability to transfer your knowledge to others. In other words, if you had an idea that could save the company $10k a year, most leadership teams will be very interested in your ideas. However, if you are not able to clearly communicate what your idea is, then your employer most likely won’t be very impressed at all.
Just throwing ideas out into the open without being able to explain them might not help you very much. In fact, that could backfire and even make you look worse!
If you cannot clearly express your ideas to others, then I would suggest that you join Toastmasters or some other organization that will help you speak clearly and effectively. I’m really working on increasing my knowledge in more areas so that I can improve my job prospects. I know that I’m young, so learning more is very important! I’m also working on increasing my communication skills, as I get very nervous when I talk to people.
Another solution is to enroll in some courses aimed at improving your communication skills. These courses allow you to work on employable skills like conflict resolution, negotiation and collaborative practice, which can help you to get ahead in your career. The best news is that you can take these courses online, so you do not have to worry about how you will fit your schooling into your already busy life and you can complete your coursework on your own time. There is more information here on the Masters in Negotiation and Dispute Resolution degree, making it a good place to begin your search.
Dress to Impress
If you’re wearing clothes that are faded and not clean looking, then you are certainly not dressing to impress. If you want to get ahead at work, you’re going to have to buy some new clothes once in a while or take very good clothes of what you currently have.
They don’t have to be designer shirts and pants, but they should be made from quality material. If you look like you’re a manager or a director, then chances are that’s how you’ll be treated. On the same note, if you dress like you’re still in high school, you probably won’t get very much respect.
This is something that I need to think about, as I am only 20 and of course look young.
Get Your Butt Into Shape
I understand that sometimes it can be tough to find the time to exercise and eat right, but the simple reality of life is healthy = good. I mean come on, you did realize that FITnancials is a healthy lifestyle blog, right? 🙂
It might not be fair, but the perception is that those that are fit are disciplined. That’s how they’ve stayed trim all these years. Again, it might not be right, but this is the typical viewpoint of the leadership team, especially in the field that I am in.
And of course in my field – personal training, the more fit I am, the better I will do and the more successful I can be.
Have Awesome Self-Confidence
This can be a tough one to talk about, but again, it’s absolutely true! If you line up the entire leadership team of the company, there are plenty of confident looking people in the group most likely.
Now, I’m absolutely not telling you to go out and get plastic surgery. That is a way too extreme. But, by having great self-confidence in how you look and feel, everyone else can see that also. Confidence is key!
How are you trying to get ahead?
