Most of us entrepreneurs and side hustlers “can’t see the forest for the trees.” It’s an old saying meaning that you’re so deep into the details of your business (aka: the trees) that you miss out on the full picture (the forest). In fact, we get so darn busy with daily tasks that we don’t ever take a moment to evaluate if those daily tasks are even worth doing.

If you want to get more done and earn more money in your business or side hustle, there is no better use of your time than to step back and evaluate things regularly.

In my experience, 30 minutes of evaluating can save you hours and earn you thousands. So let me share a few fabulous questions you can ask yourself to start evaluating today. Grab a pen and some paper and let’s get evaluating.

What am I often distracted by while I’m working?

If you find yourself getting caught up in shallow, busy-work type tasks instead of doing deep, focused work, you’re probably getting distracted quite often. Once you zero in on the source of your distractions, you can come up with solutions.

  • If your phone notifications ding constantly, put your phone on silent for small chunks of time throughout the day.
  • If you have email and social media windows open on your computer all day long, close those windows! There’s no reason for that.
  • Have kids who distract you regularly? What are five ideas you can come up with that will buy you more focused work time?

Productivity comes from “producing results”, and it’s hard to produce results when you’re constantly distracted. The first time I committed to working distraction-free, I finished a project that I thought would take me weeks in one afternoon. No lies.

Answer this question, come up with solutions, and watch yourself get more done than ever.

What tasks are creating the most revenue for me?

I spent four years as a professional blogger before becoming a life coach and this question helped me earn more money every time I answered it.

I used to spend hours each week in Facebook share/follow threads (are those still a thing?) which never earned me a dime. When I realized that the bulk of my revenue was coming from display ads on my site (from Pinterest traffic) and selling my own digital products, I was able to cut out so many unhelpful tasks from my schedule and increase the time I spent on the tasks earning me money.

Working fewer hours plus earning more money equals a happy entrepreneur! #math

Look back over the last 6-12 months of revenue your business has earned. There are likely 2-3 main sources of income that you can focus more time and energy on while letting go of tasks that aren’t earning you much money.

How can I invest in myself this month?

When you are your business, you’ve got to take care of yourself to take care of your business. You’ve got to grow personally to grow your business.

How can you invest in your physical or mental health this month? How can you invest in your education this month?

When I started out as an entrepreneur, I resisted spending any amount of money on myself or my business. I nearly burnt myself out trying to figure things out without help, plus working a full time job and then working all weekend on my blog.

The first investment I ever made in myself and in my business back when I was blogging was in a course that took me from earning pennies each month to $500 each month. The experience showed me that I am always worth investing in!

The more I take care of myself, the better I can take care of my business. The more I learn and grow, the more I earn.

It could be a gym membership, online course, massage, life coach (hey girl hey!), a new book, or an afternoon all to yourself. You are worth investing in and investing in yourself will always improve how you show up in your business.

In a nutshell…

Most entrepreneurs are so busy working in their business that they never take a step back to evaluate if they’re working on the right things or if they could be working smarter instead of harder.

Taking the time to evaluate can save you countless hours and earn you more money — that’s exactly what it has done for me!
