In October, I paid $2,000 for a treatment called miraDry to reduce my severe underarm sweating.
Ever since I was in middle school, I have suffered from something called hyperhidrosis, specifically axillary hyperhidrosis.
Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating that can be found in areas all over the body, such as the hands, armpits, butt, feet, back, and more.
My sweating is so bad that I will have sweat marks down to my hips.
Of course, I’ve tried several other things before treating my hyperhidrosis with such a costly treatment.
I have tried:
- Clinical strength antiperspirant
- Dermatologist recommended antiperspirants
- Dressing in clothes that do not activate sweat as much (yes, that is a thing)
- Oral medications
People who don’t have hyperhidrosis do not realize how costly and damaging having this condition is.
Clothes are constantly ruined and you can only wear certain types of clothing (pretty much only black or else your pit stains will show).
Not only that, it’s embarrassing. I’ve had so many people make a comment regarding my sweating. It has hindered my experience with school, my career, friendships, and everyday life. It sounds so silly that sweating can have such an impact on someone’s life – but it does! Not only that, the sweat can mix with bacteria and cause a terrible B.O. smell.
But don’t you need sweat glands under your armpits?
No. Only 2% of your sweat glands are under your armpit. Compensatory sweating does not happen either.
Is this treatment FDA regulated?
What is treatment like?
You’ll set up a consult with a dermatology office. They’ll go over what will happen during treatment and answer any questions you have.
On your actual day of treatment, you will sit in a reclining chair. They will numb your armpit area, and then start using the treatment all over your armpit area.
The treatment works by using a non-invasive hand-held device that uses electromagnetic energy underneath the underarm skin to target sweat glands. This creates thermolysis which basically kills the sweat glands.
There have been almost 100,000 treatments performed with an excellent safety record.
What is it like after treatment?
You will experience swelling, soreness, and the area will feel very numb after.
How long does treatment take?
Typically 1 to 2 hours.
Does this treatment actually work?
On RealSelf the success rate is above 89%. RealSelf is an awesome app where I have actually documented my entire journey with this treatment.
Is this treatment covered by insurance?
At this time, no. Which is super funny since botox for sweating is generally covered by health insurance, yet botox is needed every 6 months.
Is a second treatment needed?
Usually, only 1 treatment is needed. However, for someone like me, two is needed.
My experience was insanely negative. I am not going to write down all of the awful things that happened. I do believe this is a great treatment for people who have a sweating problem, however, the doctor’s office I went to was very unprofessional yet being the highest rated in my city. Don’t trust reviews!
I do need a second treatment, but I will not be going again due to how painful the treatment was. On a scale of 1-10, my experience was a firm 12. I was screaming and cussing in a doctor’s office, which is not normal for someone who is as introverted and quiet as me.
I even told them to stop at one point and said I might tap out (lol). My pain tolerance is pretty high. I have piercings and tattoos all over my body, yet it was the worst pain I have ever experienced.
After treatment, my arms quadrupled in size. My boyfriend and sister were shocked by the size and amount of bruising. I am still numb in the area after 3 weeks later, and I have also noticed some nerve pain (ouch).
Do I regret paying $2,000 for this treatment?
No, surprisingly. I wish I could’ve had the chance to go to a different dermatologist to get this treatment done. I hear great reviews from other people, saying they don’t experience any pain whatsoever.
My sweating has gone down tremendously, and I can now wear any type of colored/textured clothing I want. Most people no longer have to wear deodorant, which can save a ton of money. This treatment is also a great option for someone who is worried about the effects of wearing a deodorant with aluminum.
I am hoping this review helps someone who is thinking of getting this treatment done. If you’ve had miraDry done before, please leave your experience in the comments.
