As most of you know I am going on a trip to Cusco, Peru in the summer of 2015 for a volunteer trip helping special needs children.[no_toc]
This trip isn't free and it's actually quite expensive. I need to find a way to raise some extra money for the trip since I will have to take several weeks off from work in order to do this volunteer trip.
I was thinking about starting some type of fundraiser to get some funds for my trip. I was a little bit hesitant on the idea of raising money just because I didn't want anyone to feel guilty for helping me out or feeling pressured to participate in my fundraiser.
There is a site called Gofundme.com. It was advertised on IVHQ's site (my volunteer program) and they said many people have been successful at using that site.
If you haven't heard of it already, people can make pages to where others can donate to their fundraising event/charity. I recently read on the news that a guy had a page for “Macaroni Salad.”
I'm assuming he did it out of humor and he ended up getting tens of thousands of dollars for this. It is absolutely funny, but it kind of makes you question why people don't donate that money to somewhere else since they obviously have money to donate.
I was thinking about starting up an account from this site but I'm not sure how I feel about fundraising for a volunteer trip abroad even though the volunteer program I am going through recommends it.
Another way I want to raise money is to have a cookie/cake sale. I also saw this on the site and I thought it was amazing. Who doesn't love desserts?
I could have 2 tables (one for healthy desserts, the other for not so healthy) so it would be available for people with different types of dessert preferences.
I know a lot of people are gluten-free so I am keeping that in mind as well. I plan on asking my school if I can do this to raise money. Fingers crossed!

Scholarships and grants.
Crazy enough, there are scholarships and grants for people seeking to go abroad to study and/or volunteer. I thought this was so amazing because most people would have no clue that there was an aid for trips abroad. You can find these scholarships by simply Googling them or most volunteer sites already have them on their pages.
The last option I have is doing babysitting gigs here and there. I also plan on saving money from my checks at my 2 jobs, but I wanted to save that money for my emergency fund/other savings. I have a ton of bills as well so I don't want to rely on my jobs too much to pay for my trip.
That is why I am seeking other ways to raise money.
If you decide to pursue a volunteer program, the people will be amazing at assisting you with any questions and they share tons of great fundraising ideas and tips. I also did a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) program and I'm entered into a drawing to get my registering fee paid back if I win.
