Are you wondering how to start a blog and make money blogging?

My friend Ling from FinSavvy Panda is sharing all her insider tips on starting a blog with the goal of monetizing, her #1 tip for starting a profitable blog, and a lot more. ????

Blogging isn’t for everyone. You’re essentially working for free for a long time, which a lot of people don’t like to do. But for people like Ling, she stuck it out for the long haul and is now a successful blogger, earning up to $7,000 in one month.

Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Ling and I’m the blogger behind Finsavvy Panda where I share my personal finance and blogging tips.

I enjoy learning about millionaires and their wealth-building strategies – this is what encouraged me to write about money matters on my blog.

Outside of my blog, I enjoy making home décor items, hanging out with my friends, traveling, and sipping on my favorite Starbucks drink at their patio. I can’t hide the fact that I love Starbucks!

What made you want to start your blog, Finsavvy Panda?

It started off with me not being satisfied with any of my jobs.

I like having flexibility plus I always had the itch to do something different from a traditional 9-5 role.

That led me to try different business ideas (I really wanted to open a physical store offering home solutions), which unfortunately didn’t go according to plan.

I didn’t know what I was going to do, but I randomly came across something called “blogging” and I had no idea what that meant.

I initially thought I could start a blog and try it to see if I could make extra money on the side while I continue looking into other business ideas.

But as I learned more and more about blogging, I got really intrigued by the idea of people earning a full-time income from home.

I remember getting excited from earning my first dollar and that’s when it crossed my mind that blogging could be more than just a hobby or side hustle – it became the solution to quitting the job I hate!

How do you make money on your blog, Finsavvy Panda?

I make money with both display advertising and affiliate marketing.

When I was a brand new blogger, I used Google Adsense for display advertising.

These small wins gave me the motivation to work hard and improve my blog traffic so I could get approved by Mediavine. Premium networks like Mediavine and Adthrive pay so much more!

While I wasn’t getting a ton of traffic or earning much with Adsense when I first started, I was still able to diversify my earnings with affiliate marketing.

Investing in Michelle’s Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing course opened up my eyes to a lot of possibilities!

Today, the majority of my earnings come from affiliate income, and I’m looking forward to learning about product creation next year to diversify my blog income.

How many hours per week do you work on your blog?

For the last few months, I’ve been spending less than 30 hours per week because I’m trying to take it easy for a better work-life balance.

But when I first started, I spent anywhere between 30 to 40 hours a week on top of my full-time job.

I was very excited to learn, so I made my blog a high priority. The great thing is I actually LOVE doing it and nothing about my blog felt like work.

It wasn’t easy to work on the blog while I had a full-time job because of the limited time.

However, this motivated me to wake up early on the weekdays at 6am so I could really focus for 1-2 hours on learning something new about blogging – that could be finding ways to improve blog traffic, updating an older post to improve user experience, or figuring out how to schedule pins effectively to reduce workload.

To optimize my time while working a full-time job, I would spend my 1-hour lunch breaks doing light tasks that don’t require a lot of mental energy.

That includes things like creating a new Pinterest board, manually pinning, responding to a reader’s e-mail or reviewing something new I learned.

I utilized any spare time I had and made it become a habit.

You won’t realize that you’re actually spending time on these small wins, but they do add up and contribute to your blog growth over time.

I’m starting to see that my effort is paying off!

What’s your #1 tip for someone wanting to start a profitable blog?

My #1 tip is to have an open mind, focus on your own goals, and ignore the naysayers.

I’ve heard and seen a lot of naysayers’ critical comments about how it’s not possible to make money blogging.

On the other hand, you’ll also stumble upon a lot of blog income reports with really high numbers.

All of this can distract or even discourage newcomers from focusing on their own goals.

I have to admit, I sometimes felt discouraged by the naysayers who said I won’t be able to make any money with my blog.

For encouragement and inspiration, I would turn to my favorite bloggers’ income reports but find myself feeling discouraged and hopeless because higher numbers just seemed so overwhelming.

With that said, it helps to have an open mind and learn from the successful bloggers who inspire you, but you need to focus on YOUR own goals and progress by taking things ONE step at a time.

While doing all of this, set realistic goals for yourself and ignore all critical comments.

I also learned from you, Alexis, that working on your mindset is just as important as working on other areas of your business. I couldn’t agree more with this statement.

What’s something you’re most proud of in your business?

It makes me excited when I get an e-mail from a reader who tells me they find something I said helpful or inspiring.

The fact that I could earn a full-time living doing something that impacts another person’s life in a positive way makes me feel really happy!

P.S. I also recommend using Ling’s ready-to-go Pinterest pin templates to make click-worthy Pinterest pins. These pins are ready-to-go, all you do is change the wording in the pin. These pins are created by a blogger who gets 250,000+ page views from Pinterest each month!
