How do you make money blogging, especially in the beginning? How long does it take to reach full-time status?

Blogging isn’t easy. Most people end up quitting because they start a blog thinking it’ll be super easy. It’s hard work, but so worth it!

1. What made you want to start your blog?
Before I started blogging, I was a custom blog designer, and I sold premade WordPress themes for women.
Business was pretty good back then because I was one of only a handful of people creating feminine blog designs.
As time went on, though, my market became more saturated, and I noticed both my traffic and income start to decrease.
I started exploring ways to grow my traffic and income and came across articles talking about the importance of blogging for your business.
So I decided to give it a try, and it has been the best thing I’ve ever done to grow my business.
2. How many hours per week do you work on your blog?
I spent the last two years working to make my blogging income mostly passive.
It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it.
After putting in the work up front, I’m now able to spend around 10 hours per week on my blog to keep things running smoothly.
3. How did you make money when you first started your blog?
When I first started blogging, I was making the majority of my money by offering custom blog design services and selling WordPress themes.
I think that creating your products or offering a service is one of the best ways to make money with your blog. Especially in the beginning.
When starting, you probably won’t get a lot of traffic to your blog, so making money with ads, or with affiliate marketing may be a challenge. I’ve found those income streams to be heavily based on how much traffic you receive.
When you’re selling your own products or offering a service, you can sell your offerings, even if you don’t have a large audience.
I was earning around $30,000 a year with my products and design services.

4. What’s your #1 tip for someone who wants to start a blog and turn it into a profitable business?
My number one tip for someone who wants to start a profitable blog is to find an untapped niche.
An untapped niche is a niche where there isn’t a lot of people doing it. I believe that the biggest opportunities for bloggers are in the untapped niches.
I’ve noticed that a lot of bloggers think that the key to blogging successfully is by selling marketing advice to other bloggers/entrepreneurs.
However, the fact is that the majority of the people in this world are not bloggers or entrepreneurs. They are people who are looking for information or products that have to do with their everyday lives or interests. They want to know “how to start a garden” or “how to declutter their home.”
These are the areas where you have an excellent opportunity to start a profitable blog.
5. How long did it take you to reach full-time status?
I was able to reach full-time status in my first year. When I first started my business, I had just graduated from college, so for me full-time meant being able to make at least $20,000 a year.
I told myself that if I could earn $20,000 in a year, then I would be “legit.”
So when I hit the $20,000 mark in less than a year, I decided that this is what I would be doing full-time.
6. How do you make money from your blog now?
I’m currently making money three ways:
I offer my own products (WordPress themes, blogging course, and a printable blog planner), ads, and affiliate marketing.
7. Do you think it’s still possible to start and grow a successful blog in 2019?
Absolutely! But I think the key is to try to find those untapped niches that I talked about earlier.
If you have a self-sustaining homestead, you can create a blog that gives people free homestead advice, or you could create a course that teaches people self-sufficiency.
You could create a homestead cookbook. The list goes on and on.
8. What’s your best time management tip for building a business?
Can I share two things?
(1) Eliminate all distractions, and (2) work on one thing at a time. I wish I followed this advice more often myself.
I’ve found that my most productive days are the days when I’ve written down the things I need to accomplish for that day, eliminate any distractions, and tackle my tasks one at a time.
I often find myself getting distracted with YouTube, checking in on my Facebook group, or some other random distraction. You can accomplish a lot more if you stay focused on the task at hand.

9. What’s something you’re most proud of from your business?
The thing I’m most proud of is that I’ve been able to help others achieve their dreams.
My number one goal has always been to be a great resource for women who want to achieve their dream of having their own blog, whether it be for fun or professionally.
I’ve been able to do that with Beautiful Dawn Designs, and it’s honestly been a dream come true for me.
10. What are you currently working on in your business?
I’m not working on anything new for Beautiful Dawn Designs; however, I am currently working on a new blog. I’m following my advice and digging into the untapped niche markets.
While I love helping others grow their blogs, I have other interests as well.
I want to share my knowledge on those topics with the people who are looking for it. It’s been really fun working on a new project!
