1. Food Storage Containers
One of the best things to buy at the dollar store is food storage containers. Food storage containers can get a little pricey, but the dollar store has a variety of options. There’s a wide range of sizes and color options available.
My only complaint is my local dollar store has no glass storage options. Plastic storage containers don’t stand the test of time, get food stains on them, and you end up having to buy food storage containers a lot sooner. If you’re tight on money, plastic works just fine.
2. Reusable Tote Bags
The dollar store has a huge variety of reusable tote bags. If you live in a city or state that banned plastic bags, buying your own tote bags is a great idea.
Even if you don’t live in a city or state with a plastic bag ban, you’re still helping the environment by cutting down the billions of plastic bags used every year.

3. Holiday Decorations
Holiday decorations are incredibly cheap at the dollar store. You can buy seasonal decoration items like:
- Gift boxes
- Wrapping paper
- Table top artificial trees
- Christmas cards
- Holiday napkins and plates
I’m at the dollar store often and the seasonal items come in pretty early, but I don’t think the items go on sale once the holiday ends.
*If anyone knows if dollar store seasonal items go on sale once the holiday ends, let me know in the comments so I can update this.
4. School Supplies
The school supplies options at the dollar store can be a hit or miss. It’s important to know which items are worth buying and which are not.
While items like crayons, pens, pencils, and colored pencils get great reviews, calculators, notebooks, and binders get lower reviews.
If you visit Walmart or Target, you may find that you can get a lot more for the same price. For example, a $1 notebook at the dollar store may only have 50 pages, while Target has a 200 page notebook for the same price.
5. Gift Bags + Cards
I recently bought a card for a friend and it cost almost $5. While I appreciated the artwork, I found a card that looked similar at the dollar store for only $.50. Yes, 50 cents.
The dollar store has a ton of options for gifts that don’t break the bank.
6. Home Decor
The dollar store is filled with a huge variety of home decor options for every season.
You can get affordable items like:
- Candle holders
- Picture frames
- Bouqet Vases
I’m always surprised by the food selection at the dollar store. Even for someone who is vegan/plant based, there’s a huge selection available.
It’s important to check the dollar store because there are new food items coming in monthly that cost way more at other stores.
I’ve found frozen fruits and vegetables, drinks, pot stickers, pies, veggie burgers, fries, and more. The non-frozen aisle has a huge variety of canned goods, noodles, soups, peanut butter and jelly, and more.

This section of the dollar store is expanding and there’s increasing options available.
9. Arts and Crafts
The dollar store has a huge selection of arts and crafts. Recently, they’ve expanded their arts and crafts aisle, adding new paints, yarns, and scrapbooking items.
You can find yarn, paint, canvases, scrapbooking tools, and a lot more. You can determine which arts and crafts are worth buying by checking out the dollar store’s website and checking out the reviews there.
10. Floral Supplies
The dollar store has a huge variety of floral supplies on a budget. You can find items like vases, pots, embellishment and accents, faux florals, and more.
When I first started gardening, I bought several essential items at the dollar store’s floral department. It helped me get started and before I put a lot of money in this hobby, I was able to find out if I truly wanted to garden long-term.
