This past week, temperatures in the Chicago suburbs went to the negatives. The majority of the areas in the Chicagoland area were closed for the week, but luckily the colleges were open (insert sarcasm here).
Not only were the temperatures below zero, but add into snow/blizzards into that equation. I’m not sure how I contracted this cold, but I’ve definitely never been this sick before, and if I have it’s definitely been awhile.
I took the day off yesterday because talking or walking was simply too difficult to do. I actually thought I should go to the hospital for a second!
Tip #1: Keep yourself hydrated.
I drank different kinds of tea all day. The tea I drank consisted of boosting my immune system and also putting me to sleep. I would also add lemon to my tea and water because of the many benefits it has. On top of that, I was drinking plenty of water.
I was trying to keep my throat as moist as possible because it was so painful. It seriously felt like I was swallowing sharp knives! I hope I never have to experience that again. Simply remember to drink hot liquids because the warmth will soothe your throat that is probably going through a lot of pain right now.
Tip #2: Take a hot bath.
The steam will help clear up your congestion and stuffy nose. It also helps with the tension in your body and if you are having body aches, this will definitely help. Even standing in a shower as the hot water is going will help because of the steam.
Tip #3: Make sure to blow your nose.
You should be blowing it all out, but pushing too hard can actually damage your nostrils. Sorry if this is TMI for anyone.
Tip #4: Make sure your head is elevated.
Sleep with an extra pillow under your head. This can help with the breathing passages and help relieve the congestion.
Tip #5: Sip/eat Vitamin C.
I ate like 5 oranges yesterday and I felt like the juice was also helping my throat.

Tip #6: Place hot packs on all of the congested areas.
You can even heat up a wash rag and place it these areas that are congested.
More importantly, make sure to get plenty of rest. I wanted to workout so bad yesterday, but I knew I couldn’t because it wouldn’t help. It didn’t help that I could barely breathe yesterday either.
Overall, this is the flu season. Everyone is getting sick and you have to try your best to stay healthy and uninfected. I wash my hands after pretty much anything and make sure to stay away from people who are sick. Eat lots of healthy food and workout to get your immune system strong and healthy.
What do you do when you are sick?
