You've probably gone ahead and assumed this list is going to be filled with diet and weight loss books.
You're partially right.
After losing 60 pounds and working on losing 20 more pounds, I've learned an important lesson.
Weight loss isn't easy when you hate yourself.
Let's be real. Do you currently love your body? Do you even like it?
Weight loss has a lot to do with nutrition and exercise, but there's a main factor people always leave out.
When you hate your body and talk down on yourself on a regular basis, it makes life so much harder.
And if you think this isn't you, let's take a second and ask yourself this.
Would you treat a best friend the way you treat yourself?
Act as if you've already reached your goal. How would you feel? What kind of thoughts would you have?
Have those thoughts NOW.
I still struggle with this, I am not going to lie, but I have found tremendous happiness from loving myself now. I know it sounds “woo woo” and you may think self-love is dumb, but it's a fundamental part of weight loss. If anything, it's the most important part.
I once got down to 115 pounds. I thought happiness would be at that weight. Guess what?
I hated myself more than ever.
I hated my body during my before photo just as much as I did in my after photo.
I talked down on my body for so long that I didn't even know how to love myself. Even at a low weight.
Below are 10 books I recommend reading in order. We will start off with books that focus on your mindset and then work toward books that can help you with your nutrition and exercise.
1. You Are A Badass
Have you ever read a book and finished it with a huge “feel-good” smile on your face?
I stumbled upon this book in an airport when I was bored one day and little did I know it would change my life.
You Are A Badass is a transformational book that will teach you how to stop doubting yourself. You'll learn to love yourself and start living an awesome life, just as the book cover says. It's so true!
I recommend reading this book s-l-o-w-l-y and really taking in what the author is saying. If you read this book quickly without really understanding what she is explaining, you'll learn nothing.
“By the end of You Are a Badass, you will understand why you are how you are, how to love what you can't change, how to change what you don't love, and how to start living the kind of life you used to be jealous of.”
2. The Gifts of Imperfection
The Gifts of Imperfection will teach you how to let go of who you think you're supposed to be.
You'll learn how to embrace who you are and increase your self-worth. You'll begin to finally love yourself and treat yourself with acceptance and love.
This book can transform your way of thinking if you give it a chance. There were many skeptics that this book would be a typical self-love book and it isn't.
The Gifts of Imperfection is so much more than that.
3. Madly In Love With Me
Madly In Love With Me will teach you how to love yourself and become your own best friend.
This book will teach you how to value, love, and care for yourself in practical, fun ways.
There are exercises in the book that will make this process easier. This is a great book to give to a teenager, too!
4. Girl, Wash Your Face
I only read this book last month and again, l i f e – c h a n g i n g.
Girl, Wash Your Face is such a fun read. The author exposes the many lies and misconceptions that often hold us back from living our best life.
She also shares the strategies she used to move past the many things that were holding her back and how to live your life with passion and confidence.
5. The Tao of Pooh
2017 was one of the roughest years of my life.
I do not share personal info on my blog, but just know it was devastating. It was shitty.
This book took me out of a funk that I didn't think was even possible to get out of.
The Tao of Pooh is a quick read that you can probably finish in a couple hours. I read it and afterward felt a huge emotion of calmness. This book really put my problems into perspective and gave me peace.
6. The Obesity Code
The Obesity Code is a must-read for every person on the planet.
If you want to learn how to lose weight the easiest way possible, read this book.
The Obesity Code teaches people how to practice intermittent fasting, which has been a daily practice of mine for years.
To give you a quick definition, intermittent fasting is when you don't eat for x amount of hours and eat for x amount of hours. Doing that gives you various health benefits, which all are listed in this book.
For example, I fast 16:8, which means I fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8-hour time frame.
Some days I practice 48-hour fasts and I experience incredible benefits, such as clear skin, reduced bloat, weight loss, and so on.
7. The Women's Health Big Book of Exercises
The Women's Health Big Book of Exercises allows you to get comfortable and familiar with various kinds of exercises that require body weight or weight equipment.
Learning how to do exercises is a fundamental tool for getting in shape.
With improper form, you can hurt yourself, reverse progress, and not get the full value of an exercise.
8. BodyBoss Ultimate Fitness Guide
Last year BodyBoss reached out to me to try out their BodyBoss Ultimate Fitness Guide. I didn't have high expectations but I was SO blown away.
In this guide, you get a fully comprehensive 12-week step by step training program. This includes warm-ups, exercise routines, and cool-downs. The workouts only take 24 minutes, 3 times a week.
If you don't like working out at the gym or you want to save money, I highly encourage you give this fitness guide the full 12 weeks. You will see results if you stick to it!
Also, this book is beautifully made. It's made of thick paper, so it will last for years. The book costs roughly a 1 month's gym membership.
In a nutshell:
Books are an incredible way to learn about improving your health all from the comfort of your home. 1 book can change your life. All you have to do is execute what you've learned and take action in real life.
What book has changed your life?
