Being surrounded by delicious foods in Italy has made me crave sugar more than ever.
There seem to be at least two gelato shops for every block in the town of Bologna. I’ve come to the conclusion that I can no longer satisfy my sweet tooth with gelato and instead have opted out to be a little bit healthier every day.
This has motivated me to create a post of the top foods that I eat that kick my cravings away, while simultaneously satisfying my sweet tooth.
Deprivation is not my forte, so instead of stuffing my face with gelato every day (and sometimes even twice a day), I’ve decided to eat healthier foods that are delicious as well as filling.
Here are 7 of my favorite, most filling foods that will satisfy any sweet tooth.
1. Dark Chocolate
This is my all-time favorite way to satisfy a sweet tooth. A few pieces of dark chocolate with a high percentage of cocoa has many benefits on the body, such as lowering blood pressure, the possibility of lowering the chance of cardiovascular diseases, and more.
Dark chocolate also has plenty of fiber, iron, and other nutritious minerals that are vital for the body.
If you’re going to stuff your face with chocolate, at least choose dark chocolate over regular milk chocolate.
I’m not much of a fan of eating plain sliced apples, so I instead choose to slice up the apple and sprinkle cinnamon all over.
I might even throw the apple into the microwave for a quick minute to make a sort of “apple pie” if you will.
It’s a delicious snack as well as creates a nice aroma in your home. Cinnamon is also known for controlling insulin levels and speeding up the metabolism.
Apples are filled with fiber, so it’s a great food to start out your morning or to eat when you’re craving a bunch of sugary foods.

No, I’m not talking about plain old oatmeal. Oatmeal is one of the best foods to buy due to how inexpensive it is as well as how many different meals you can make with it.
I’ve been making quick 3 ingredient oatmeal cookies for almost 5 years, and there always a hit amongst family and friends. All you need to do is mix together oatmeal, ripened bananas, and either raisins, dark chocolate chips, or brown sugar.
This is such an easy dessert to make that is delicious as well as filling.
I eat edamame like chips. I’ll buy a frozen bag of it and pop it in the microwave and eat the entire bag, which is usually only about 200 calories, more importantly, it’s filled with fiber and other nutrients that are very good for your body.

5. Sweet potatoes
I am ADDICTED to sweet potatoes. I actually don’t buy them too often because if I had a whole bag of them in my pantry, all I would eat is sweet potatoes, and obviously I need to be eating other foods as well. Sweet potatoes are another food that is jam-packed with fiber.
If you care about calories, sweet potatoes have fewer calories than white potatoes and are also much sweeter than white.
Sweet potato fries are another option, which is very easy to make and much cheaper making yourself rather than buying it in a frozen bag.
All you have to do is cut the sweet potato into somewhat thin pieces, then lay them flat on a pan with some water.
I put it in the oven for a good 20-30 minutes and voila! I stuff my face with sweet potato fries and ketchup. Ketchup. Is. Heaven.
6. Banana ice cream
Super easy to make and significantly more healthy than ice cream.
All you have to do is freeze up some ripened bananas overnight. The next morning you blend up 2-3 bananas, then mix in whatever kind of ingredients you like.
I usually mix in cinnamon, berries, and it comes up tasting AMAZING every single time.
My boyfriend loves this recipe! If you’re lactose intolerant or vegan then this recipe is perfect for swapping out ice cream.

7. Frozen fruit
One day I saw my boyfriend eating a bowl full of frozen fruit and thought he was the weirdest human being in the world. Then I asked myself, what’s so weird about that? He was eating fruit while I was stuffing my face with ice cream.
I took a few bites of his frozen fruit and it tasted better than my ice cream, no lie. Frozen fruit is usually significantly cheaper than fresh fruit, and it can be used for your “healthy banana ice cream”.
What do you eat to satisfy your sweet tooth?
