Dating doesn’t have to be expensive. And while going to a dinner and a movie may be fun, cinema tickets are rapidly increasing in price and dinner every week starts to add up.
My favorite dates have always been free. Volunteering at animal shelters is my favorite kind of date night. It’s so much fun and feels so good.
Below are 15 fun and free date night ideas!

Volunteering is a great way to get to know your date while giving back to the community.
Visiting an animal shelter is always a great idea, but there are plenty of other volunteering opportunities to look into.
VolunteerMatch.org is a website that gives you information on volunteer opportunities in your area.
If you’re trying to be extra frugal, many volunteer opportunities will throw events for their volunteers that will include food and drinks.
2. Attend a free concert
Free concerts are readily available in most cities, especially on the weekends.
I love going to concerts as a date because you get to dance, sing, and you can talk about the awesome experience afterward.
3. Workout together
Working out is in my top 5 favorite things to do with my boyfriend.
You’re supporting each other throughout, pushing the other one to get stronger, and transforming into a better you along the way.
Working out together doesn’t have to be at the gym, but could be riding bikes, going hiking, kayaking, or snowboarding. You can even try out a new activity you’ve never done before!

4. Go on a hike
AllTrails is an awesome free app that will list what hikes are available in your area.
You can filter out the different hikes by difficulty, length if it’s dog-friendly, and more.
5. Find a good spot to watch the sunset
Watching the sunset is a classic way to go on a date.
Bring some wine, prepare a small and easy dinner, and enjoy each other’s company.
You don’t always need to be doing something with your date. Just enjoy the world and its natural beauty.
6. Check out museums on free days
Just like finding free concerts, you’ll do the same thing for museums.
Museums often have free days that land on days when they’re not busy.
Tip: $5 Meal Plan is an affordable meal planning service that helps you save money, time, and stress by meal planning. For $5 a month, you get a pre-made weekly meal plan and complete shopping list, and access to a drag and drop meal plan builder. You even get a 14-day free trial by clicking here.
7. Be a tourist in your city
Instead of going on an expensive vacation far away, explore your city.
I know so many people who live in St. Louis but have never been to the Arch – that’s saying a lot!
Type in your city on Google and figure out what free things there are to do.
Figure out where the tourists go! It’s a great way to feel like you’re on vacation somewhere far away.
8. Cook together
Cooking together is a great way to laugh, get to know each other, and become a better cook all at the same time.
9. Go on a wine or brewery tour
Many wine and brewery tours are free.
Tip: Want to save money when shopping? Ibotta is a free money-saving app that gives you cash back at almost any store. You get real cash – not points. Ibotta is my go-to app for saving money on groceries (even fruits and vegetables!), clothes, travel, and a lot more. You even get $10 in your account just for signing up through my link here. If you’re downloading Ibotta on your phone, the app will ask if you have a referral code. Use my referral code: lwyxxrb and you’ll get $10 for signing up.
10. Go to a karaoke bar
Though you wouldn’t catch me dead in a karaoke bar, this is a great way to open up with your date and get out of your comfort zone.
11. Have a dog date
Doggie dates are probably one of the best ways to get to know your date in a relaxing and comfortable setting.
Dogs are a great conversation starter because you can find out a ton about the other person.
Where did they get their dog? What is their favorite thing to do with their dog?
You can also usually see personality similarities between the date and the dog, too!
12. Go to a city festival
Most city festivals are free (not counting music festivals, obviously).
In St. Louis, there seems to be a huge festival every other month with music, arts and crafts, food, people selling their handmade goods, and more.
13. Bring out your hobbies or interests
Are you into cycling? Reading books? Drawing?
Plan a date centered around your favorite activity (or your dates).
Tip: Are you looking for an online job? Become an online English Teacher at Qkids and make up to $20 per hour from home. You can learn more details and apply here.
14. Play music together
Do you and your date play instruments?
Meet up at a local park and play music for each other, and try to play something together. A great date for the creative/music types!
15. Go camping
I recommend only going camping if you’re the outdoors type.
A lot of people don’t like camping (bugs, cold, no real bed, etc.). And complaining the whole time is a great way to make sure you never see your date again.
If you do enjoy camping, make sure to find a free camping area before you head off on your journey.
