1. How Not To Die

My doctor was the one to introduce me to How Not To Die.

This book reveals scientific research and evidence that shows that diet can not only prevent disease but reverse the diseases that so many Americans are struggling with.

Dr. Michael Greger, the author, is a physician, nutrition expert, and the founder of NutritonFacts.org. He believes that instead of treating patients with hundreds of pills, we instead take a close look at diet instead.

Did you know that the majority of premature deaths can be prevented through a healthy diet?

Dr. Michael Greger dives into the topic of doctors excelling at treating illnesses, but are poor at preventing the disease in the first place.

Over 1.6 million people in the United States die from diseases that could very well be prevented and even reversed. He backs the entire book up with scientific evidence.

You’ll learn about which foods you should be eating on a daily basis, and what kind of lifestyle changes you need to make.

5. The China Study

Another book recommended by my doctor, The China Study talks about how crucial healthy, whole foods are for the body, backed by science and results from thousands of people all around the world.

It is possible to reduce the risk of cancer and other diseases just from the food that you eat.

The China Study is the most comprehensive study that has ever been done that talks about the relationship between diet and disease.

The results of this study opened the eyes of doctors and people from all around the world, showing the dangers of a diet high in animal protein.

6. Intuitive Eating

Intuitive Eating will help you rebuild your body image and become at peace with food.

Most of us have suffered from overeating and have gotten mad at ourselves for our lack of control, but we aren’t entirely at fault, if at all.

The problem is that we are constantly on diets, and in the diet mindset, which is causing us to live on strict rules and because of that, we have stopped listening to our bodies.

Intuitive Eating will teach you how to end the diet mentality, how to stay satisfied with what you eat, how to honor hunger and feel full, as well as many other lessons that will create a healthier mindset.

7. Food Matters

If you’re trying to eat healthier and improve the health of our planet, Food Matters is a must read.

Food Matters will teach you how to eat healthier on a budget, while also shrinking your waistline and carbon footprint.

As we all know by now, the planet is suffering from climate change, and we see the destruction all around us.

Just by eliminating meat a few times a week, you can help cut your carbon footprint and help the planet.

We need to start making changes now, or our kid’s grandkids are going to be suffering from our mistakes.

“In terms of energy consumption, serving a typical family-of-four steak dinner is the rough equivalent of driving around in an SUV for three hours while leaving all the lights on at home.” That is insanity to me!

8. The End of Heart Disease

Heart disease is the #1 cause of death in the United States, and nothing even comes close to this disease that kills millions.

Why are so many Americans dying of heart disease?

The cure for heart disease isn’t medication or surgery, but instead what you put into your mouth.

Over 99 percent of deaths from heart disease are preventable through a healthy diet.

Instead of taking risky procedures and expensive procedures, Dr. Fuhram advocates that we take healthy eating seriously.

He has over 25 years of clinical experience treating people with heart disease, and he noticed the percentages of Americans getting diagnosed with heart disease was continuing to increase at a rapid rate.

The book includes a detailed menu plan and recipes, as well as a FAQ section.

9. The Starch Solution

So many people are afraid of carbs due to the Atkins diet, and before I go any further, I want to mention that Robert Atkins (founder of the Atkins diet, the popular low carb diet) suffered from heart attacks, congestive heart failure, and hypertension in his life.

When he was admitted to the hospital, he weighed 195, when he died, 9 days later, he weighed 258 pounds from fluid retention.

Most people don’t realize that when you’re on Atkins, you’re losing water weight, and when you stop living on Atkins (let’s face it, who can make that a lifestyle?), you’ll gain it all back.

Carbs are not bad for you; they’re good and necessary for a healthy, energetic body.

Dr. McDougall proves that a starch-rich diet can actually help you lose weight, keep you fuller for longer, and can even prevent illnesses and possibly cure diseases. This book will teach you how to learn how to feel satisfied, gain energy, and feel your best.

10. But I Could Never Go Vegan

But I Could Never Go Vegan is first book I bought when I transitioned to a plant-based lifestyle (I actually went from meat eater to vegan overnight).

I started cooking these recipes for my boyfriend, family members, and coworkers, and they had no idea they were vegan!

Dairy never settled in my stomach or skin, (I had extreme acne all over my body!) so I was so happy to see so many dairy-free desserts.

I’ve created tofu-haters into tofu fanatics.

You can learn how to make Tempeh Bacon Mac N Cheese, Peanut Butter Cups, Tofu Chevre, and tons of other awesome recipes!

The entire book is filled with pictures and even step by step pictures.

  1. I’m actually reading “Eat To Live” right now, and really finding it fascinating (though, a bit repetitive). I’m just beginning to understand the benefits of going over to a plant-based lifestyle. However, having eaten mostly vegetarian in just this past week, already I lost 2 lbs! And yet, I felt like I had eaten a TON of food! So, it’s definitely something that’s peaked my curiosity!

Have you ever read Dawn Jackson Blatner’s book, “The Flexitarian Diet”? I wonder how it’d compare, here?

And “Intuitive Eating” has been one of my absolute FAVORITE books in the past 12 years… Totally changed the way I view dieting and eating — for the better! (also, in the same vein, though from a Christian perspective, “Thin Within” by Judy & Arthur Halliday).

Thanks for this post — I added a few titles to my To Be Read list that I’d not yet heard of! 😉
